What is a periodontist and how is that different from a regular dentist?
A periodontist specializes in diagnosing and treating gum disease, placing dental implants, performing gum-recession treatments, bone grafting, and other procedures involving the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. Because of their additional training, periodontists like Premier Periodontics’ doctors provide advanced gum and implant care that general dentists may refer to.
When should I see a periodontist instead of a general dentist?
If you notice signs such as red or swollen gums, gums that bleed when brushing or flossing, receding gums, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, or pain — these could be early signs of gum disease. It is a good time to schedule a periodontal evaluation. Even if you’re not experiencing noticeable symptoms, regular checkups help detect problems early before serious damage or bone loss occurs.
What is periodontal disease (gum disease)?
Periodontal disease (also called gum disease) is an infection of the gums and structures supporting the teeth. It usually begins as gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gums) and can progress to periodontitis — which may lead to gum recession, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss if left untreated.
Can gum disease be prevented?
Yes. The best way to prevent periodontal disease is through good oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings. That means brushing twice daily, flossing or interdental cleaning daily, possibly using mouthwash, and visiting your dentist (or periodontist) regularly for checkups and cleanings. Lifestyle factors also matter — avoiding tobacco, managing health conditions (such as diabetes), and maintaining healthy habits all help reduce risk.
What types of treatments does Premier Periodontics offer?
Premier Periodontics offers a range of services including deep cleanings and maintenance, gum disease treatment, dental implants, osseous surgery (pocket reduction), gum grafting/bone grafts, laser periodontal therapy (LANAP), and other advanced periodontal procedures.
Do dental implants feel and look like natural teeth?
Yes. Dental implants replace the root with a metal post and support a crown that is shaped to match your natural teeth. Properly placed implants function and feel like natural teeth. They also prevent shifting of surrounding teeth and help preserve bone structure, which can decline after tooth loss.
Is treatment always surgical?
Not always. Periodontal treatment depends on each person’s situation. Early-stage gum disease can often be managed non-surgically with deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) and improved oral hygiene, possibly avoiding surgery. Surgical procedures are recommended only when necessary, based on gum and bone condition.
Will my insurance cover periodontal treatment?
Premier Periodontics works with several major insurance providers. Many insurance plans offer coverage for periodontal care, but coverage can vary depending on the plan and procedure. The practice also accepts major credit cards and financing through third-party options for patients without insurance.
What if I don’t have insurance — are there payment options?
Yes. In addition to accepting many insurance plans, Premier Periodontics offers payment flexibility. They accept major credit cards and may provide third-party financing options to help make treatment more affordable.
What can I do to maintain my gum and oral health long-term?
Maintain daily oral hygiene: brush twice a day, floss daily, and follow any additional care instructions from your periodontist. Attend regular checkups and cleanings as recommended. Avoid tobacco, maintain a healthy diet, and manage overall health conditions like diabetes. Periodontal health often affects — and is affected by — your overall health.
How do I schedule an appointment at Premier Periodontics?
You can call any of their convenient offices (Lexington, Danville, Richmond — and other locations) to book an appointment, or use the contact form on their website. Same-day appointments may be available depending on location and schedule.
